ESD-safe materials dissipate static charge safely across their surface, protecting sensitive electronics from electrostatic discharge during handling. A single unprotected static discharge can destroy a microcontroller, so this is not a nice-to-have — it is a requirement in any electronics manufacturing environment.
ESD-safe filament works by adding conductive carbon-black to the base polymer, bringing surface resistivity into the controlled range of roughly 10^6 to 10^9 ohms per square. Charge drains slowly and evenly across the part instead of accumulating and discharging suddenly.
This is the only correct material for PCB trays, wafer carriers, IC handlers and semiconductor assembly jigs. Using ordinary ABS or PLA for these applications is a genuine manufacturing risk. Parts are supplied in matte black, which is a direct consequence of the conductive additive.
